Abstract
The banking sector is the most important component of financial system. Commercial banks performance is therefore an important subject given the significant role the banks play in the economy. Customers' and investors' trust in Kenya's banking system has dwindled, according to statistics from the country's banks. Imperial, Dubai, and Chase bank were all placed under receivership as a result of this. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of between knowledge management and performance. The study's objectives were to determine the effect of knowledge creation, sharing, acquisition, and storage on performance of commercial banks. The study’s theoretical framework included the resource-based theory, knowledge management theory, balance score card, and organizational learning theory. This study used both descriptive and explanatory research methods. Commercial banks in the town of Nyeri were the focus of this research. Heads of sections were the respondents in the study. This included regional managers, branch managers, credit managers, operations managers, marketing managers and supervisors. A total of 61 heads of sections in the banks took part in the study by filling and returning the questionnaires distributed. The interviewees themselves filled out a form that was used to gather the data for this research. The supervisor's evaluation of the study's questionnaire helped to guarantee its veracity. The business institutions in Murang'a County underwent pre-testing. The instrument's dependability was examined using data from the pre-test. Reliability was demonstrated by the Cronbach alpha statistic, which was measured at 0.825. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the quantitative data in this research, while content analysis was applied to the qualitative data. Tables were used to display the results. The research discovered a significant and favourable link between knowledge management and the operation of commercial institutions in Nyeri Town (r=0.886). According to the findings, knowledge management could account for 78.5% of the success of private institutions in Nyeri Town. Results indicated that there is a significant correlation between knowledge management practices and performance[F(4,56)=50.993, P=0.001]. Both knowledge acquisition (p=0.046) and knowledge sharing (p=0.01) were statistically significant. The research concluded that knowledge sharing and knowledge acquisition are crucial to success. The researcher recommended that commercial banks should use benchmarking to create new knowledge. The researcher also recommended advanced system ought to be used in banks to store knowledge safely.
