This presentation looks into the aspects of library inclusion, innovation and access to digital and print information resources for library users – keenly focusing on the visually impaired (VI) ( partially/low vision and totally blind) users- as pivotal in realization of the 21st Century library. How can the visually impaired students access the information resources that their able peers can access and conduct relevant studies and research with ease and efficiency? With the vast growth of digital libraries, it is easy for the visually impaired to miss out on vital information which is available in digital format. Kenyatta University Post Modern Library has immensely supported use of digital resources for the VI by putting in place assistive technology. Assistive technology encompasses use of student-centered computer adapted software and active process of interactive data exploration for the visually impaired non-visually. The Library has witnessed major transformation, from the archaic modes of recording via cassette and use of microfiche for reading and storage. Modern technology is availing journals, books and coursework in digital format for access by the VI using Jaws and NVDA software. Other facilities which contribute greatly to the academic standards of this category of users are recording using computer recording technology and note-taking facilities using speech-to-text recognition facilities. Braille is also used as external memory aid to prevent high mental workload levels and speech synthesis is used to access detailed information on demand. By offering both tactile and audio techniques to extract information efficiently, the students with visual impairment will function independently and effectively while accessing information library.Item Towards national etd database: responsibilities for libraries in Kenya(2013-10-18) Thuku, John KiiruThis paper outlines the status of theses and dissertations publications emanating from Kenyan universities and efforts towards enhancing their visibility. It gives a background on the factors contributing to the growth of theses and dissertations which include the rise in number of universities, increase of approved graduate courses and the higher number of students graduating. It further outlines the responsibilities for libraries in management of theses and dissertations, and emphasizes the need for adapting new technologies to fulfill their roles. Librarian, as experts in collection development, information storage, cataloguing and dissemination, should take leadership role in management of information in any format as well as in planning and developing institutional repositories. Also collaboration with various stakeholder who are concern with local content such as Kenya Education Network (KENET) is emphasized. It advocates for establishment of national repository that takes a central role in management of the scholarly research publication. It describes an institutional, national and African-based repository (INAR) model for management and dissemination of ETDs. INAR is a 3-tier hierarchal setup that has the institutional repositories (IR) are at the bottom, then the National ETDs in the middle and the regional DATAD database at the top level. R.Cloud computing is a recent technology that help organizations use third party internet-based servers and computing services to manage their operations without necessarily building and maintaining the networking infrastructure. Universities in Europe, America and Asia have gradually migrated some of their systems to cloud computing with great success. Indeed research show that where cloud computing has been adopted there exists many opportunities that improve teaching, learning and management at Universities. Unfortunately many educational institutions particularly in Kenya are not able to take full advantage despite the low costs involved, flexibility in access points and ease to integrate a wide range of devices such as ipads, phones and laptops that are accessible to students and tutors. To this end, there is need for research that identifies the potential areas of application and also on the systems that work in education process. This paper explores the need for action research in integrating cloud computing in tutorial administration and group discussions as a strategy to enhance interactivity and participatory in learning. It gives an overview of functionalities of E-learning systems and how group tutorials are suitable prototypes. Finally the paper explores how Kenya, as nation in the region, is ready to embrace cloud computing in elearning systems.
