dc.description.abstract | The purpose of the study is to investigate the use of metaphor in the Abanyala and Swahili riddle. The researcher was inspired by the fact that even though the writers and researchers of riddles did a lot in collecting, classifying and giving functions of riddles, the aspect of the use of metaphor in riddles was overlooked. More so in the specified communities. Most riddles are in fact metaphors for this reason the researcher looked into the use of the metaphor in the Abanyala and Swahili riddle. The researcher based on the principles laid out in the Semiotic Theory which was found by Ferd inand de Saussure in the year 1906. The theory was later developed by Charles Pierce and Roland Barthes who had a different view from Ferdinand de Saussure. Pierce and Barthes associated sign and meaning in relation to the context. Pierce believed that sign as an object, can be classified as an icon, an index, or a symbol. Barthes is associated with the code which he believes that it can be used in analyzing literature, he further divided the code as follows: proairetic, hermeneutic, semic, symbolic and referential codes. These principles were used in establishing types of metaphors in the Abanyala and Swahili riddles. The importance of metaphors in the Abanyala and Swahili riddles. The principles also guided the researcher in finding out why the Abanyala and Swahili use riddles.
