Abstract
This research aimed at investigating narration in taarab songs with the aim of identifying the role of narration aspects in presenting taarab songs. The narrative aspects that were investigated were narrative time, characterization, narrative levels and voices and speech representation. The researcher used narrative theory. This theory is associated with a Greek Philosopher known as Plato, it was later developed by narratologists like Genette, Stanzel. Manfred Jahn and Mieke Bal. It pertains narration of a story. The tenets of this theory is that, a narrative hasa narrator, a story, speech that represents an act and characters. The objectives of this research wereto identify the various narrative aspects in taarab songs and how the narrative aspects in taarab songs make them to be termed as narratives,to show how narrative aspects helps in bringing out various themes in taarab songs and to show how narratives aspects aid in stylistic devices in taarab songs. Data collection was done in the library. Books, journals and thesis related to our topic of study were studied in detail. Primary data was collected from taarab songs that were selected by purposive sampling were listened to, recorded and interpreted. Tools that were used in collecting and recording data were note books and pens. Data collected were analyzed by narrative theory. Report of this research was presented in five chapters. This research contributed to the scholarship of the song as a genre of oral literature specifically the taarab song. It showed that taarab songs has narrative and poetic characteristics. Finally, it has demonstrated that taarab song is a slippery genre which bears the characteristics of a narrative.
