Abstract
Teaching should entail more than just workbooks and textbooks. It should engage
learners and make them part of learning. Schooling is one of the means that society
prepares their young ones for the future. For children to learn and develop child friendly
environment is necessary. Use of teaching and learning aids creates such a friendly
environment. Teaching aids are materials used by the teacher to supplement classroom
learning or to stimulate learning. The purpose of this study was to establish pre-primary
school teachers' use of teaching aids to enhance learning in pre-primary schools in Isinya
Sub-County and the factors influencing their use. The study was carried out in Isinya
Sub-county, Kenya. The target population was pre-primary school teachers in selected
schools in Isinya Sub- County. The theory that guided the study was cognitive
constructivism learning theory by Perry William which views learning as a process of
active discovery. The study adopted a descriptive cross sectional research design, this
enabled collection of information on attitude, opinion and habits of preschool teachers
with aim of teaching aids. Cluster sampling technique was also employed. Data was
collected through the use of questionnaire and observational checklist. A sample size of
20 schools of the target population was drawn from the pre-schools. Test retest method
was conducted to check for reliability of the instruments. Validity was ensured using
content validity to make sure research instruments measure what they were intended to
measure. Quantitative and qualitative methods were used to analyse data. Data were
presented using tables, graphs and pie charts. The study revealed that most teachers
adopted only one teaching aid with majority using black/white board. The study further
revealed that several factors influenced the use of teaching aids in pre-schools which
included; non-availability of teaching aids, teachers' attitude and perceptions on
particular teaching aids. Strategies that can be used to improve the use of teaching aids in
pre-schools including improvisation of teaching aids from locally available resources,
creating awareness to teachers on the importance of using teaching aids and use of
computerized teaching aids.
