Abstract
The issue of leadership style is a major and basic concern for all organizations and institutions in various countries. Leadership style can be described as the features, behavioral propensity, and unique methods of a person in a leadership position. Teachers' performance could be described as the duties performed by a teacher at a particular period in the school system in achieving organizational goals. The study specifically sought to identify leadership styles applied by secondary school principals. The objectives of the study were: To investigate the relationship between leadership styles of secondary school principals and the performance of the teachers. To find out the effect of principals’ effective leadership roles and responsibilities on the teachers performance in secondary schools in Benadir region. To establish the leadership styles that impact greatly on teachers’ performance in secondary schools in Benadir region. Questionnaire was used as an instrument to collect data and the researcher also used descriptive case study as a research design. Since our country has experienced civil war by the collapse of the central government in Somalia in 1991, the country’s education went down and there was no effective ministry of education controlling the progress of education both in primary and secondary schools, schools were taught many different curriculums based on other countries’ cultures and educational umbrellas have the functions of the ministry of education. The problem of this study therefore is to determine what relationship exists between principals’ leadership style and teachers’ performance in secondary schools in Benadir Region. Finally the researcher found out that 72% of the respondents strongly agreed that there is significant relationship between principals leadership styles and teachers’ performance.
The researcher concluded that increase in democratic leadership practice increases teachers’ performance. The study concluded that leadership styles affect teachers’ performance in secondary schools in Benadir region. The researcher recommended that the head teachers should use democratic leadership style since it increases teachers’ performance.
