Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the green human resource management on Employee Performance in the department of HRM in the Nairobi City County Government. The study was a survey, which sought to make inquiries from the staff members of the department of HRM in the Nairobi City County Government on the Green HRM practices. Quantitative research was used to gain better knowledge and in depth understanding of the issue on GHRM in the department of Human Resource Management in Nairobi City County Government. The dependent variable was employee performance whereas the independent variables were green human resource. The theories that underpinned the study included; Resource Based Theory, Outcomes Theory, Human Capital Theory and Stakeholder Theory. Descriptive research design was adopted by the study. The target population of the study comprised the staff members in the department of Human Resource Management in the Nairobi City County Government. The study population hence was made up of the middle grade employees (Grades A – F). The population size for this category was 1318. Using simple random sampling technique and Yamane simple formula, the study obtained a sample size of 384 respondents. The study used primary data which was collected using structured questionnaire. The collected data was analyzed quantitatively with the aid of SPSS software using both descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. The results were presented in tables, charts and bars. The finding revealed a coefficient of determination of 0.767 and adjusted R squared of 0.764 at 95% significance level, implying that the independent variables used in this study which included green employee participation, green employee compensation, green employee training and green recruitment selection jointly explained 76.7 % of the variation in employee performance at the department of human resource management in the Nairobi City County Government. The remaining 23.3% of the variation in employee performance at the department of HR in the City County can be explained by other factors which were not part of the current model. The study also found that green employee participation had a positive and significant effect on employee performance at the department of human resource management in the Nairobi City County Government (β =.223, p=.000<.05); green employee compensation had a positive and significant effect on employee performance at the department of human resource management in the Nairobi City County Government (β =.317, p=.000<.05); green employee training had a positive and significant effect on employee performance at the department of human resource management in the Nairobi City County Government (β =.367, p=.000<.05); green recruitment had a positive and significant effect on employee performance at the department of human resource management in the Nairobi City County Government (β =.052, p=.012<.05). The study concludes that green human resources practices such as green employee participation, compensation, training, recruitment have positive and significant effect on employee performance. The study thus recommends that the management of Nairobi City County should develop strategies and systems for Green Performance Green participation, Compensation, training and recruitment that are more integrated in the Human Resources management system. Companies can create programs to motivate employees to have green environmental behavior at work.
