Abstract
Motivation is important in any given organization to increase work efficiency and effectiveness that eventually leads to high levels of productivity and the benefits thereof. People are motivated by different kinds of needs depending on their age, sex, culture, social status and ambitions. They have basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter, but they also need acceptance, recognition, and self-esteem. Each individual experiences those needs in different ways and to varying degrees. No one approach to motivation works for all people or for the same person all the time. For this reason, it is necessary that managers sensitively seek appropriate ways of motivating their employees as individuals, if, organizational performance is of concern to them. The main aim of this project was to assess the specific factors of motivation that can feasibly be used at the workplace to increase the performance of female employees. It sought to clarify the challenges females go through both as employees and homemakers, and how these challenges can negatively impact on their work efficiency at times. The study will targeted 500 female teachers in Government secondary schools and tertiary colleges in Meru Central District. The district has 92 public schools, 2 Teachers Training Colleges (T.T.C.'s) and 3 Technical Training Institutes (T.T.l.'s). Cluster sampling was adopted and a 10% of the total population was sampled. The female teachers and head teachers in clusters were the representative sample, this totalled to 50 female teachers and 9 head teachers. Descriptive data was collected and was analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively. The findings revealed that a number of motivational approaches are in use in Educational Institutions though there exists issues concerning female teachers that need to be addressed for better performance. A number of recommendations have been made to the relevant people concerned for future action.
