dc.description.abstract | India and Kenya have had diplomatic relations that can be traced way back to when Indian traders began trading along the East Coast of Africa. By 20th Century there was a shift in the turn of relations. This study focused on inter-state relations: a case of healthcare relations between Kenya and India. The study focused on the status of the existing interstate relations between Kenya and India; to examine the gains or losses for Kenya from the interstate healthcare relations with India, the implications of interstate relations on healthcare were also evaluated. The study was mainly anchored to the Realist Theory. To some extent, the study was also supported by Institutionalism theory. The study utilized a descriptive research design. The study targeted staff at the Cabinet Secretary’s office in the Ministry of Health, personnel at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International trade, and staff in India’s High Commissioner’s office in Nairobi. The research's list of competent respondents on Kenya-India diplomatic ties was compiled using a purposive sampling method. The study focused on these institutions because they were involved in health issues, diplomatic relations, administrative rules and procedures, and records storage that involved the two states on matters concerning healthcare relations. They were chosen in this study since they were involved in the country's interstate relations and issues related to health diplomacy. They were considered knowledgeable and in a stronger situation to provide information related to the country's interstate ties and healthcare relations. The primary data was collected from interview schedules as the main data collection tool. The secondary data was collected from books, journals, newspapers, theses, conference proceedings, and dissertations from Kenya National Archives, Kenyatta and Nairobi university libraries. The study concluded that Kenya and India have been able to maintain diplomatic relations since the colonial days to date. The study findings indicated that realizing the impact of the gravity of the healthcare relations and India’s huge population and size, the country had elevated this issue in its interstate relations by working together with Kenya to ensure timely affordability and accessibility of medical products. The two countries have managed to improve their cooperation by having joint health research programs, India supplying affordable essential drugs to Kenya, the building of cancer hospitals in Kenya, establishing of funding for healthcare, sharing of knowledge and research, and establishment of companies that facilitate the travelling of patients from Kenya to India. At the end of the study, it was evident that in recent years, Kenya and India relations have enhanced healthcare relations and have been vibrant in terms of capacity building, improved pharmaceutical products, medical expertise, technology transfers, knowledge sharing, and skills development. The influx of Indian aid, capital and medical and pharmaceutical personnel also had potentially profound medical and pharmaceutical developmental consequences for Kenya. It recommends that Kenya strengthen its relations with India, especially in healthcare relations, for her to realize Vision 2030. The study implies that the symbiotic relationship boosted these two countries' goals. Kenya benefited from the advanced and cheap medical industry in India, and in return, India benefited from the foreign exchange from Kenya. The two countries also partnered to provide cheaper drugs for most ailments and conditions in Kenya. | en_US |
