Abstract
Savings and credit societies world-wide provide opportunities to millions of people to grow through access to savings, affordable credit and a chance for a secure tomorrow. From the reviewed literature, SACCOs in rural areas suffer from low management capacity. This low management capacity often results in poor performance of SACCOs (Peck 2006). The study was aimed at finding out whether there was any relationship between performance of SACCOs and level of management. The study adopted a descriptive approach to investigate the research problem. Literature review was categorized into three parts, these are; achievements of cooperatives, challenges of cooperatives and literature on SACCOs. The study was carried out in the two SACCOs within Bureti district. A sample population of 203 members was used in the study from a total population of 2,026 SACCO members. In addition, 20 members from the management boards were also used from a total population of 30 members. Questionnaires were used to collect the data. Questionnaires had both c1osed- ended and open- ended questions in order to capture both qualitative and quantitative data. Data analysis was descriptive and it was done with aid of SPSS computer software package. The SPSS computer programme generated frequencies and percentages which were used in data analysis. Data was presented in form of tables which showed frequencies and percentages. Recommendations of the study was based on the analyzed data.
