Abstract
This study was intended to determine the relationship between the design of the indigenous poultry value chain and its productivity in effort to understand why the indigenous poultry farming is underperforming. This is due to the fact that literature shows that there is great potential in indigenous poultry farming. The general objectives of carrying out this study on value chain design for indigenous poultry production in the semi-arid areas of Kenya was to find out if the value chain design affects poultry productivity. The specific objectives of the study were to identify the design of the indigenous poultry value chain in Makueni District, determine the performance of the indigenous poultry farming and compare the design of the value chain and the performance of the indigenous poultry farming in Makueni District. The study was a descriptive survey targeting the stakeholders of the indigenous poultry production in Makueni district. The study was done in two divisions of Kathonzweni and Wote. The farmers in registered groups formed the population for study. Random sampling was done to make a sample of 60, who were interviewed for information. Data was collected using a structured interview schedule that was administered by trained enumerators. This data was then be analyzed using descriptive statistical methods and then presented in tables, figures, graphs, percentages and descriptions. The results of the data analysis were presented and conclusions drawn. From the results it has been concluded that the indigenous poultry value chain in Makueni district is poorly designed and this has led to low poultry production despite there being a great potential and an unmet demand. This study therefore recommends that action be taken by all stakeholders, led by government agents such as extension staff to promote proper value chain design, to create sufficient awareness in the farmers on potential markets and the potential of value addition as well as promote the uptake of credit among these farmers for them to realize full potential and as a source of employment.
