The research aimed at analyzing illustrations in children literature and their contributions in conveying intended message. The researcher analysed adapted texts of Wasifu wa Mwana Kupona (King‟ei, 2008) and Alisi Ndani ya Nchi ya Ajabu (Hadjivayanis, 2015). The researcher focused on; identifying different types of illustrations used in the selected adapted texts and their contributions in conveying messages, analysed challenges in relation to illustrations derived from Wasifu wa Mwana Kupona (Kingei, 2008) and provided possible solutions to the challenges. Consequently, the researcher evaluated challenges in relation to illustrations derived from Alisi Ndani ya Nchi ya Ajabu (Hadjavayanis, 2015) and provided possible solutions to the challenges. The research was guided by adaptation theory by George Bluestone (1957) which was later modified by Goodman (1976), Andrew (1984) and Starrs (2006). Adaptation theory states that a new independent body work is formulated from the initial work. Data that was used in the research was from the library. In the library the researcher read journals, thesis and books related to the research. Moreover, the researcher also read, analysed and wrote down all important works related to the selected texts; Wasifu wa Mwana Kupona (2008) and Alisi Ndani ya Nchi ya Ajabu (2015). Finally, the data collected from this research was analysed by focusing on research objectives and the tenents of the Adaptation theory. The research findings identified the different types of illustrations used in the selected adapted texts. Illustrations identified in the study included; cartoons, map, coloured pictures and drawings. In addition, it was noted that illustrations were used to convey message if used appropriately. Challenges in relation to the usage of illustrations in the selected adapted texts have been discussed based on aspects of children literature that is; the relationship between an illustration and a text, through character potrayal, challenges in relation to setting of a story and colour usage. Furthermore, solutions to the challenges in relation to the usage of illustrations in the selected adapted texts have been explained using the same aspects of children literature mentioned above. This research has contributed to Kiswahili and children literature and more importantly, in children adapted illustrated stories. This is because, the research has laid foundation on issues pertaining illustrations in children literature. Besides, stakeholders in children literature, illustrators of children stories and ministry of education will benefit from research findings in conjuction with selecting a well illustrated child booken_US
