Abstract
Quality and timely delivery of streetlight projects is important especially in low-income areas within Nairobi City County due to insecurity and the need to promote business in those areas through good lighting. The performance of the lighting projects has been dismal due the associated delay and inadequate installations. This research endeavored to evaluate the influence of project management aspects on the performance of street lighting projects in low-income areas within County of Nairobi. Specifically, the study sought to ascertain the effect of planning and initiation, M&E and stakeholder participation on performance of street lighting projects in low-income areas within Nairobi City County. Theories which were used in this study were resource-basedtheory, constraints theory and project life cycle theory.Descriptive research design was used. The population of interest in this study was 33 street lighting projects in Mathare, Kibera and Korogocho whereby the data was collected from project Manager, consultants and Projects engineers. A design for a census survey was used. SPSS version 23 was employed, and descriptive statistics and regression analysis were applied. The association between project management components (project planning, project M&E, and stakeholders’ participation) and performance was investigated using a multiple regression model. The research findings were presented using tables, charts,, frequencies and percentages format and that the model's modified R2 value of 0.659 showed that project management factors were responsible for 65.9 percent of the performance variance and according to the study the dependent and independent variables were statistically significantly positively correlated. Therefore, In order to decrease the possibility of failure, this study recommends to the project management team to continuously assess the project's progress.The outcome of this study was valuable to numerous stakeholders including project financiers, non-government organizations and other policy makers within the Nairobi City County.
