Factors influencing project implementation of community based projects: a survey of banana projects in Kisii County, Kenya

| dc.description.abstract | A study on community-based banana projects was undertaken to investigate the challenges of project implementation. The objective was primarily to identify and document the leadership competence, financial management, employee motivation and community participation challenges facing the project implementation. The study adopted a descriptive research approach which involved using survey design as the strategy for collecting and analysing data for the purpose of classification of the data. The project implementation study had a target population of five hundred and forty groups which was geographically well spread in Ogembo district. A stratified random sampling design was used where ten per cent of the target population was used as the respondent. The study involved the use of questionnaire method of collecting data which was administered through dropping and picking of the questionnaires from the respondents. Moreover the study analysed the data through descriptive statistical method. Descriptive statistics will involve the use of frequency distribution tables, percentages and the measures of central tendencies which includes the mean, the mode and the median. The data was collected, coded, analysed appropriately and conclusions drawn. The data collected was processed and analysed through the use of statistical packages for social sciences (SPSS) computer packages. Finally the data was presented using the tables and charts for ease of interpretation and to enhance clarity and precision. The following findings were noted, 61 % of the project leaders are incompetent in their leadership, 56% of the project leaders do not have skills in financial management, and 53% of the employees and members are not adequately motivated while 59% of the members are inadequately involved in community participation. The following recommendations were noted which include employment of technical staff especially those with skills in financial planning and management to handle the finances and the assets, development of proper procedure for holding democratic elections to enhance participation in the project development, allowing leaders to pursue higher education to develop their skills and knowledge, adequate motivation of members through rewards, incentive, payment in time and participation in development, research and extension services should be improved so as to yield banana varieties that are high yielding through enhancing technological development and Government policy to enhance sustainability of the project to enhance monitoring, evaluation and strategy through the provision credit facilities by banks to enhance high productivity. | en_US |
