Abstract
This study is about the role of fables in children’s literature. Its main objectives are to evaluate the role, themes and literal devices used in fables to make them significant to children. It was a descriptive research done in the library. Purposeful sampling was used to select three fables. These were: Ngiri Mganga (2010) by Kariuki, Sungura na Mbwa (2011) by Nyakeri and Sisimizi Amuua Tembo (2004) by Mayega. Data was collected and analyzed according to research questions and objectives. The research was guided by two theories; semiotic and narratology, whose scholars are Pierce (1977) and Prince (2003) respectively. The Semiotic theory analyzes the meaning of the fables to children. It depicts the roles they play in educating chidren. Fables are themed to relay specific lessons to children. The narratology theory describes the style used by the writer. Writters ensure fables are written in a manner that enables childern to understand them easily. The role of animal characters in children’s literature is explained. The findings were described and summarized. The importance of fables to children is explained. The research is beneficial to authors, university students and any one else interested in children’s literature.
