Abstract
This study aimed at assessing cruel children characters in selected literature books in the youth category. It investigated and analysed the types of cruelty of these children, the reasons that contribute to their being cruel, the effects of this cruelty on other characters and how it can be managed. The following novels which target the youth audience were examined: Siku Njema by Ken Walibora (1996),Tumaini by Clara Momanyi (2006), and Lulu ya Maisha by John Habwe (2013). The study showed that although a child is usually viewed as a victim of cruelity, some children are perpetrators of cruelty and therefore the community needs to come up with ways of controlling their actions. The study found that children commit physical, verbal and emotional types of cruelty. The study was guided by the social learning theory by Bandura (1977) whose proponents include Baltes and Reese (1984) and the realism theory whose proponents include Gustav (1850), Rene Wellek (1961)and Lazaro Carreter (1970) among others. Social learning theory assisted the research in explaining how children learn by observing role models within their environment. The theory of realism assisted the research in showing how cruelity in the community is reflected by writers of literary work. The study was conducted through desktop research. Primary data was obtained by reading the novels mentioned above, dividing the data thematically and analyzing it according to the research objectives. The study compared and cross-validated the research findings with those in journals, news papers, theses, books and other online publications on the subject matter. The research findings were presented in descriptive form. Some of the strategies to address cruelty among children that the study found included reducing potential causes of cruelty in children in families, at school and in the society. The research findings will benefit authors, researchers, editors, publishers and other stakeholders of Literature in highlighting cruelity in a broader percpective of the child not only as a victim of violent situations but also as one capable of acting violently towards other members of the community. Besides, the findings could help those dealing with children issues to device best ways of curbing violent acts in children.
