Abstract
This study investigated the performance of bodaboda SACCOs in the transport sector in Murang'a County, Kenya. Bodaboda's are the informal industry in Kenya that provide alternative transport service to millions of people and are essentially useful in the transportation system in Kenya Transport plays an important role in integrating the various sectors in the economy. Bodaboda accounts for 7% of the total transport in the country (Republic of Kenya, 2002).The directive by the Minister for co-operatives, Joseph Nyaga to all Bodaboda operators to form SACCOs or Limited Liability Companies by the end of the year 2010 (June 7th 2010, star page: under governance) made the researcher to carry out a research on the performance of these Bodaboda SACCOs in the transport sector This research has renewed the work done previously by other researchers in the areas of: the role of Bodaboda transport in Kenya, the struggle of regulatory and economic sphere of influence in the bodaboda means of transport in Kenya, the organization and the future of the bodaboda industry in Kenya amongst other areas The descriptive research design has been used in the methodology. Stratified sampling has been used to draw sample from selected active bodaboda SACCOs registered in Kandara by the District cooperative office; Kandara district. The census for this study has been 5 bodaboda SACCOs. Both primary and secondary data has been collected for further quantitative analysis. The data was collected using questionnaires given to the sample members/owners and the employees of the selected bodaboda SACCOs. The questionnaires included structured and unstructured questions.The quantitative data collected has been analyzed using modem statistical methods and application such as Ms Excel and SPSS. The results have been presented by the use of the descriptive statistics such as distribution tables, pie-charts, bar-charts, standard deviation and measures of central tendency. The recommendations and findings of this work will be useful to government policy makers and all the stakeholders in the bodaboda SACCOs in improving their operations and growth in the transport sector.
