dc.description.abstract | Despite the key role played by Small Medium Enterprises in enhancing economic growth of Kenya, and other parts of the world, lack of competitiveness has adversely affected performance of this firms. Small Medium Enterprises lack the necessary expertise, experience, resources, and capital to compete fairly with large enterprises. This study investigated effect of strategic agility on competitiveness Small Medium Enterprises in Starehe Sub-County in Nairobi City County in Kenya. In particular, the determined the effect of responsive capability, organizational learning, total quality management and innovation capability on competitiveness of Small Medium Enterprises in Starehe Sub-County in Kenya. The study variables were informed by dynamic capabilities theory, evolutionary theory of the firm, resource-based view of the firm and market-based view. Data collection and analysis was guided by descriptive research design. The target population of this study was Small Medium Enterprises whereas the unit of observation was either management or owners of these enterprises. Data was gathered using a structured questionnaire constructed on Likert rating scale with five points. The test of validity and test of reliability were carried out to confirm the suitability of the research instrument for collecting the pertinent data. Descriptive analysis of data focused on measures including mean, standard deviation and coefficient of variation. Inferential analysis involved correlation statistics and liner regression analysis. The study revealed that the four dimensions of strategic agility including responsive capability, organizational learning, total quality management and innovation capability have a positive contribution to firm competitiveness. There is a need for development of a policy framework to entrench flexibility, speedy delivery of services and resource mobilization and as such enhance competitiveness of SMEs involved in this study. Further, clear guidelines should be provided to institutionalize accessibility of knowledge, team leaning and knowledge sharing as basis for enhancing outcomes of Small Medium Enterprises. There is also a need to strengthen commitment of management as well as ensure continuous improvement in value creation and delivery system with focus on quality. Firm resources need to be made available in appropriate quantities and qualities to support execution of core activities of these enterprises. Notably, firm resources should be utilized to support and strengthen activities and practices intended to actualize product innovation, process innovation and market innovation amongst Small Medium Enterprises in Starehe Sub-County. | en_US |
