dc.description.abstractThe study was undertaken to investigate the evolution and activities of Jeshi la Embakasi in the period1992-2010.This study sought to achieve the following research objectives; To examine the background history of vigilante groups in Kenya 1992-2010, To investigate the origin and activities of Jeshi la Embakasi Movement in Kenya 1992-2010 and to interrogate the change in the organization of Jeshi la Embakasi Movement 1992-2010. The study was guided by the Rational Choice theory and made use of qualitative research design. The study was carried out in Nairobi County and more specifically in Embakasi North. The study targeted both male and female aged 18 years old and above and who were knowledgeable on Jeshi la Embakasi. Both snowballing and purposive sampling techniques were used in the selection of the sample population. In some instances, the researcher randomly selected participants. Both primary and secondary data were used in the study. Primary data was obtained from direct interaction with the participants in the field through interviews and focus group discussions. Secondary data was obtained from books, articles in journals, reports, theses and dissertations. Data collected was analyzed thematically and periodically and then presented in form of narration followed by first hand quotations from the primary respondents. The findings include: Embakasi group emergence; the group was formed with the sole purpose of providing political protection to their founder. The study’s conclusion was that, vigilant groups are formed due to the failure of the state in providing sufficient security to its people as well as by existence of malicious groups with ill-motivated interests.en_US
