The capability of a firm to carry out its objective or program well into the future is referred to as a project's sustainability. Improper enactment of projects is not necessarily a result of project management skills. Nevertheless, how a project is handled has a major impact on its realization. The problems faced throughout the use of project management competencies have included poor quality, money and schedule overruns, and inadequate project planning. This study was conducted to look into the sustainability and project management skills of road construction projects supported by the Embu County Government of Kenya. The specific objectives were to determine the effect of stakeholder involvement, leadership support, communication, and resource allocation on the sustainability of road construction projects in the Embu County Government, Kenya. This study was anchored on Agency Theory, Resource-Based View Theory and Sustainability Theory. This study used a descriptive research design. The entire number of ward representatives, county engineers, site engineers, road contractors, surveyors, and road construction technicians made the target population, which were 176. 20 ward representatives representing electoral wards where road projects were performed were thus included among the study's participants. It has 83 road construction technicians who have finished implementing road projects to bituminous standards, 25 county site engineers who are engaged on a permanent basis by the governments of Embu and Kenya, 13 road contractors and 20 surveyors. A population census was carried out because of the tiny population and the need to improve data accuracy in order to obtain accurate results. Data was collected using questionnaires and analyzed using both descriptive statistics and regression analysis. The study established a positive and significant relationship between stakeholder participation, leadership support, communication and resource allocation and sustainability of road construction projects. The study concludes that community participation during implementation of projects in county governments is a vital as it leads to better outcomes for all stakeholders, stakeholder ownership and lower project costs. Leadership support is considered one of the critical success factors in sustainability of road construction projects; effective executive involvement can significantly improve project success. Maintaining open, regular and accurate channels of communication with all levels of project staff and stakeholders is vital to ensuring the effective implementation of capital expenditure projects. Allocation of resources helps managers to bring together more productive and effective project teams and workgroups and enables them to appraise their schedules and easily estimate resource availability in real-time. The study recommends that strict scrutinization of project teams to be done to ensure that all the stakeholders are well represented. This will ensure that various needs are effectively addressed. The top managers from the county governments should ensure proper planning; organizing is done according to the set objectives of the project and also leads and motivates the staff involved in the implementation of the projects. Project activities should be communicated to every party concerned during implementation of projects and the county governments should establish the right channels of delivery messages and feedback in both top-down and bottom-up communication. The management of the county governments should identify the right resources towards effective implementation and sustainability of the projects.
