Abstract
Performance appraisal provides an excellent opportunity to fix the problem of organizational
achievement in terms of employee engagement, teamwork, time management and innovation.
Survival of any organization lies on strategies meant to achieve organizational achievement. The
main objective was to establish the effect of performance appraisal strategies on organizational
achievement of Kapkatet level four hospital in Kericho County, Kenya. Specific objectives were,
to establish the effect of 360 degree evaluation, management by objectives, behavioral anchored
rating scale and graphic rating scale on organizational achievement of Kapkatet level four
hospital in Kericho County. The findings of the study would be useful to enhance future
appraisal of employees in different and related organizations, improve performance appraisal
strategies, improve feedback, and enhance career development and other human resource
practices linked to appraisal more so in public health sector particularly in Kericho County. The
study was anchored on Goal setting theory, expectancy theory and control theory, used a
descriptive research design with a target population of 206 employees of the hospital. Stratified
random sampling technique was used to select a sample size of 60 respondents. Data was
collected by use of a questionnaire and quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive
statistics. Data was presented using tables, pie-charts and graphs. The findings revealed that
performance appraisal strategies had a positive and significant effect on organizational
achievement. From the findings, respondents agreed that objective based appraisals contributed
to organizational achievement. The findings showed that management by objectives strategy was
objective and that behavioral anchored rating scale was aligned to organizational achievement.
Results indicated that graphic rating scale prioritizes tasks for achievement improvement and
tasks identified are applied for self-development. The study concluded that the hospital appraise
employees’ often through accomplished targets, organization goals, time management and
efficiency in performance to increase organizational achievement. The study recommended that
the hospital appraises employees periodically and top management continually review, revise
and align performance appraisal strategies towards organizational achievement. Performance
expectations and actual performance must be deliberated continually and regularly in line with
achievement. The study also recommended feedback mechanism be reviewed, simplified and
improved to be more detailed and realistic in structure to reflect the prevailing achievement
levels.
