The local policing efforts introduced in Kenya in 2015, as represented in the Nyumba Kumi initiative are legislative endeavors focused on achieving local security through communities’ increased involvement in collaboration with the security agencies. The community policing effort has varied challenges undermining its objective throughout Kenya. So far, in the Suna West sub-county in Migori County, several factors have challenged the attainment of community policing, tackling insecurity objectively. The factors that hinder the success of the security initiative include strained community-police relationships, lack of trust, and the fear of retaliation due to personal vendetta. Community policing initiative faces the challenges of being misused by accorded leaders, who use the opportunity for personal benefit, socioeconomic status, and unstable conflict resolution channels. High crime rates in the Suna West sub-county, as compared to other sub-counties, exemplify the urgency of a working security strategy. This study examined the critical determinants affecting the achievement of community policing initiative in maintaining law and order security in Suna West sub-county, Migori County, Kenya. The focus areas were community awareness, collaboration, technology use, and information sharing vis-a-vis security operations. This study was based on the Collective Efficacy Theory, emphasizing the capacity of communities to offer informal support and social control; Social Cohesion Theory, underlining the strength of social relationships and solidarity and Social Cognitive Theory, pointing to observational learning and social interaction influences on community policing. This study’s target audience members were local community members, Nyumba Kumi leaders, and local administration leaders such as village elders and area chiefs in the Suna West sub-county. Stratified random sampling was used to ensure each group was well represented, and a sample of 210 respondents was used. Stratified random sampling ensured that all groups were proportionately represented and validated in determining the results. Data was collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using SPSS version 26 through descriptive and inferential statistics. The research sought to offer insights that would assist in improving community policing and increasing public safety security within Suna West sub-County. Ethical considerations were upheld by acquiring consent and maintaining confidentiality of completed questionnaires and responses submitted towards this end. The project of community policing has made considerable progress towards this end, as indicated by decreased crime, efficient responses during an occurrence of an emergency, and peaceful settlement of conflicts. Pearson product-moment correlation analysis revealed that community awareness (r = 0.759, p= 0.000), cooperation (r = 0.793, p = 0.000), technology (r = 0.450, p = 0.000) and information sharing had a strong and positive statistically significant relationship with keeping law and order intact. Based on this research, it can be concluded that community awareness, cooperation, technology, and information sharing have a great deal of importance in keeping law and order intact and ideally help move towards observing more intensified levels of securities.
