Abstract
Office of Attorney is coming under lots of pressure in order to deliver their mandate. Several factors constrain Attorney General’s Office to establish and enhance policies to increase in their work. Despite the fact that a lot of money is spent to hire qualified litigants and other staffs, little attention has been given to employees’ performance at Attorney General’s Office. The study generally investigated the effect of human resource management intervention influence performance of employees in Kenya legal industry. The study specifically investigated the influence of monetary rewards, team building, job enrichment and training and development on employee performance. The study was guided by Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory of Motivation, expectancy theory, Herzberg two factor theory and dynamic capabilities theory. The study utilized a design of descriptive research. The population for this study consisted of 175 State Counsels or legal practitioners at Office of Attorney General. The study used proportionate stratified sampling method to ensure that all cases are well represented. The study adopted a 30% sample size representation of the total population targeted which resulted to a sample size of 56 respondents. Primary data was collected using questionnaires. Content, construct and criterion validity was done to ensure validity of the research instruments. The reliability of the instruments was ensured using Cronbach’s alpha test. Analysis of data was carried out using descriptive statistics and inferential analysis. The study established that monetary rewards, team building, job enrichment and training and development had a positive significant influence on employee performance. The study concluded that monetary reward has a significant effect in terms of motivating employees and promoting teamwork that will enormously improve organizational performance thus lead to the organization to achieve its objectives. Team building increases employee morale and has positive impact on their performance. The study established that people had different perception about the use of team building in their organization. Job enrichment comprises several components such as task significance, task identity and skill variety aimed at improving employee performance particularly among manufacturing firms leading to them performing passionately. Training and development improves capabilities attitudes, skills, behaviors and knowledge of the employees thus improving their performance. The study recommended that monetary reward system to be enforced to enhance the performance of the legal practitioners through giving better pay, bonuses, allowances, insurance, incentives, promotions and job security. The office of Attorney General should consider each employee's ideas as valuable, set an example to team members by being open with employees and sensitive to their moods and feelings. The study recommended that the office of Attorney General should ensure that objectives are understood and defined. Provide necessary resources and tools for employees to give them the best opportunity to perform. The study recommended that effective training programs and carefully set development plans should be provided to all employees to enable them to enhance their skills and upgrade their knowledge
