Abstract
Employees are the backbone for any institution thus count as an important resource within institution. For every institutional success depends on the performance of their employees. Workforce diversity is vital for employee performance as it tends to directly influence performance of the employees within an institution. This study was done in all the 5 branches of Kenya School of Government. It was established that KSG had been experiencing a decline in employee performance that resulted in the overall performance of the institution. The study sought to determine the effect of workforce diversity on employee performance within KSG. This study was guided by the following specific objectives; to establish the effect of gender, age, ethnicity and the level of education influence employee performance in KSG. This study was anchored on Equity theory, Similarity/Attraction theory and Human Capital theory. Further the study looked at the empirical literature review on workforce diversity (age, gender, ethnic and level of education diversity) and employee performance. The study used a descriptive research design since it ensured complete descriptive of the situation through ensuring that there was minimum bias in the gathering of data. The target population of this study was the staff of KSG that comprises of 568 employees of all its branches. The study adopted a simple random sampling method to represent the entire population. The selected sample size of 85 respondent comprising of the top management, administrators, faculty, support staff and hospitality of the KSG. Questionnaires were used to gather data containing close-ended and open-ended to the sample respondent hence ensuring that every respondent received the same set of questions exactly the same way. The questionnaire’s validity were tested by use of the supervisor and expert opinion and its reliability were checked by use of Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient. The data collected was checked for errors and then it was analyzed using descriptive statistic by use of mean and standard deviation with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 21 and for inferential statistic, regression analysis was done to ascertain the correlation between workforce diversity and employee performance. The data collected and analyzed was shown in the form of charts, graphs and tables. The study found that gender diversity, ethnic diversity and the level of education had a positive significant relationship to employee performance. However, age diversity had a negative significant relationship to employee performance. The study concluded that age diversity had a negative and insignificant influence on employee performance in KSG. The study recommended that KSG formulate policies and strategies that would enhance employee performance.
