Abstract
This study was on the effects of ISO 9001:2000 Certification on the performance of registered organizations in Kenya. The overall research problem that was addressed in this study was that despite the claims made as to the effect of ISO 9001:2000 in improving effectiveness, efficiency, competitiveness, market share, reduction of waste and profitability in companies which have been certified, no study has been done to indicate that this may necessarily be true in Kenya as data that has been used as evidence is based on results of research done elsewhere.
The main objective of the study therefore was to find out through research, the effects of the standard on the performance of said organizations as determined by improved productivity, improved salability of the organization's products and services and improved profitability.
The study adopted a descriptive research design using a questionnaire consisting of a combination of structured qualitative questions followed by eleven quantitative
questions using a five point Likert scale to measure the perceptions about the effects of ISO 9001:2000 certification on the respondent organizations. This questionnaire was sent out to a sample of 43 organizations obtained through systematic sampling on a sampling frame of 212 certified organizations in Kenya (Kenya Accreditation Service, 2008).
Data was analysed quantitatively and qualitatively using descriptive statistics as a basis to answer the research questions. These descriptive statistics were presented in tables and pie charts to indicate the effects of ISO 9001:2000 certifications on certified organizations and conclusions were inferred from the statistics.
From the study, the researcher found that ISO 9001:2000 had a great impact in organizations that were certified as it led to improved organizational performance. The research revealed that certification to ISO 9001:2000 improved productivity in the firms sampled, increased market share, led to reduction of the cost of production and also led to improvement in the quality of products and services of the certified firms, customer satisfaction and profitability.
The researcher concludes from the results of the research, that certification to the ISO 9001:2000 standard, has the effect of improving the performance of the certified organizations as defined by improvement of the indicators mentioned above.
The study recommends organizations both in government and the private sector to adopt the ISO 9001:2000 standard as a basis for improving the performance of their organizations. It also recommends that once certified, the organization should implement ISO 9001:2000 as required by the standard in order to gain the benefits mentioned
