Abstract
Technical and Vocation Education and Training Institutions in Kenya have persistently encountered a number of obstacles, including graduate employability, curriculum quality, low enrollment rates, and inefficient use of available resources. Despite the increase in the number of students pursuing higher education, the performance of these institutions has not improved. The modern business climate necessitates those businesses, especially TVET institutions, recognize and harness their strategic competencies in order to compete successfully and improve their performance. These institutions must capitalize on their talents and strategic initiatives to obtain a competitive edge. This study seeks to study the influence of strategic initiatives and performance of TVET institutions. Specifically, this study seeks to investigate the effect of staffing, learning resources, knowledge management and innovation on performance of TVET institutions in Kiambu County, Kenya. The research was grounded in the resource-based perspective and supported by the dynamic capabilities’ theory, Michael Porter's generic theory, and the strategic leadership theory. The research employed a descriptive design. The sample size was 268 respondents, with three TVET institutions in Kiambu County serving as the target population. The researcher acquired the sample using stratified and purposive sampling techniques. Using a semi-structured questionnaire, primary data were collected. Using descriptive and inferential statistics, quantitative data were analyzed and displayed in figures and tables. The study contributes to knowledge by filling identified contextual, empirical, and conceptual gaps in the existing literature. The study concluded that strategic interventions will enhance performance of TVET institutions.
