Abstract
This research focused on the pragmatics of the noun phrase in Kiswahili syntax. Pragmatics focuses on how people use language in contexts and real communication situations. Pragmatics is therefore a profession that examines meaning based on certain context. Among the contextual implications that were dealt with in this investigation were the three generalized kinds of meaning which were considered in analysing the noun phrase, which are; experiential meaning, interpersonal meaning and textual meaning. This study was guided by Systematic Functional Grammar Theory which was established by Halliday and it explains how language is used in real communication. Noam Chomsky’s X- Bar theory was also employed in this research. This study aimed at determining the set features of Swahili noun phrase, challenges in generating elements of noun phrase in Swahili syntax among students in high school, college and university so as to determine the pragmatic functions of the noun phrases in Swahili syntax. Delibarate sampling method was used where 120 respondents were involved in this research. Data was collected using questionnaires, interviews and observation methods. The target population included lecturers, teachers, young graduates from colleges and high school, students in high schools and colleges from Nakuru County in the field of Swahili in order to attain the main objectives of this study. The finding of this research determined three set features on the noun phrase in Swahili syntax. The said set features include: a noun phrase comprising of pronoun and adjective, noun phrase comprising of noun, adjective and dependant clause and last but not least is the noun phrase comprising of noun, verbal noun and adjective. This research also specified how noun phrase can countain pragmatics message when used in communication. Challenges which hinder generation of set features of noun phrase were as well determined in this research. Some of the challenges include: set features of noun phrase are confusing, the presence of an adjective in another adjective and adjective semantic expansion. The findings of this research will broaden the understanding of the noun phrase in a different perspective and therefore, contribute positively to the already existing studies. Furthermore, proposals of this research will also be of value to students, book writers, Ministry of Education, government, curriculum planners, future reseachers and upcoming teachers in Swahili as they will be in a position to expand their understanding and knowledge of pragmatics which is a subfield of linguistics.
