Abstract
This study intends to critically analyse !JO\V the theme of hope manifests itself in the lives
of characters of selected Swahili novels. The selected Swahili novels for the sake of this
study arc Chcche za Moto (2008) and Nyuso za Mwanamke (20 J 0). The authors of these
novels are John Habwe and Said Ahmed Mohamed respectively, These novels were
purposefully selected because of various reasons. They are very current, written between
2008-2010 and therefore minimal research is perceived to have been done on them. The
novels also pOitray very difficult co.iditio ts and situations of lire that their characters
undergo in their quest for liberation These difficult conditions are economic and political
as manifested in Cheche za Moto and cultural as portrayed in ,f\(YIlSO za Mwanamke.
Therefore, the researcher wil! be charged vvil\) the responsibility of {~nding out if at all
there exists hope in such difficult situations, especially, in the lives of the characters of
theseselected novels. The topic of this study was selected on the basis that hope, in the
novel or literaturc,is part-mount because the difficult conditions and situations that
human beings undergo in their daily lives, need to be highlighted and special remedy
sought to bring focus on those who have already lost hope in life. This study will use the
theory of Social Realism. The proponents of this theory are Karl Marx and G.F. Hegel.
The Theory will basically b:e used to analyse the difficult economic, political and cultural
situations that emerge in the selected novels and show how the aspect of hope exists
therein. The tenets of this tl.eory will be very handy as they will serve as the backbone of
analyzing the theme of hope in the selected novels. Our research will be done in the
library. The researcher will embark on reading books, novels, journals, magazines and
theses in order to succeed in his work The selected novels will be read indepth and
critically analysed to bring out the entire aspect of hope among the members of the wider
society.
