The Hindu council of Kenya and its role in the provision of social services in Kenya
Abstract
The study was designed to explore the perceived impact made by the Hindu Council of Kenya in its Endeavour to develop and provide social services in Kenya. The field work for the study was conducted in the city of Nairobi, and its environs. It sought to find out the people the Hindu Council of Kenya targets, their characteristics and the assistance they get, methods used to deliver available assistance, peoples perception of Asians role in development and also to explore the problems which face the organization in its operations. The methods used in obtaining data were library research, interview using questionnaires, document review, observations and discussions. The data was analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively and information presented in tables, diagrams percentages and in descriptive forms. Basic need theory was used as a basis for prediction and explanations in the study. The findings revealed that the Hindu Council of Kenya is impacting positively in many areas of development and provision of social services in Kenya. However it was facing many problems as a result of the methods it uses to deliver the services and also due to the people’s attitude towards Asians in general. It is therefore recommended that the council develops modern approaches to deliverance of services. It is also recommended that there is need for co-ordination of NGOs activities in Kenya. It was observed that the Government should play more active rolling making NGOs operate effectively.
