A survey of Management and Organization of Library Facilities in Selected Secondary Schools in Eldoret Municipality Uasin - Gishu District
Abstract
The study set out to investigate the current state of secondary school libraries in relation to their organization, management and use.
The study covered five secondary schools in Eldoret Municipality. The population sample of the participants consisted of headteachers, Teacher-Librarians and students of the schools selected. The participants provided the required information in their respective questionnaires. In addition to questionnaire the researcher employed observation and informal interviews to gather more information.
The data collected was analyzed, presented and interpreted: Among the findings made are: -
1. All the schools surveyed provide library services for their students and teachers;
2. None of the Secondary schools surveyed has a purpose built library;
3. except for two schools which have full time library assistants, the remaining schools' libraries are wholly run by Teacher-Librarians who do not have the basics of librarianship.
4. The libraries are not adequately stocked in terms of books as well as equipment and furniture.
On the basis of the findings, a number of recommendations are made towards better organization and management of secondary school libraries.
