Abstract
This study investigated the utilization of Kenya National Archives and Documentation Service (KNA and DS) by different categories of students. The study sought to establish the relevance of KNA and DS resources in modern education. The factors that hinder effective utilization of KNA and DS resources were outlined and analysed. The study also sought to find out the different categories of students who use KNA and DS facilities and the problems they face when trying to access information from the services. Different publicity channels were outlined and their effectiveness assessed.
Random sampling was used to get the required sample populations. 10 members of staff whose activities are connected with search room operations were selected. 50 students were also selected from five different educational institutions, 30 from secondary schools, 10 from the Kenya polytechnic and 10 from Kenyatta university. 10 teachers were also selected from the three different secondary schools.
The study used four different questionnaires, each one for the four different categories of respondents mentioned above. Observation secondary sources and interviews were also used in data collection. The data so obtained was analysed using percentages. The findings were summarized using descriptive analysis and tables.
The study found out that archival resources within KNA and DS are highly underutilized by students. These are especially students in primary and secondary schools. It also revealed that these two categories of students are denied access due to institutional as well as legal factors. The other categories of students also face several problems when trying to access information from KNA and DS. The study therefore came up with several recommendations, which are intended to enhance the utilisation of KNA and DS by students. The study is presented in five chapters. Chapter 1 gives the relevant background information on the development of archival practices in Kenya. Chapter 2 is a review of the related literature while chapter 3 outlines the methodology of the study. Chapter 4 is on data presentation, analysis and discussion while chapter 5 gives a summary of the findings, conclusion and recommendations.
