Abstract
Kenya Power and Lighting Company provide electricity distribution services to diverse consumers. These consumers include individual homes, businesses and industrial consumers amongst other electricity consumers. The organization as the sole distributor of electricity in the country affects the economic livelihood of individuals and corporation, the country’s gross domestic product and the country’s ability to achieve vision 2030 developmental milestones. However, despite its critical role in the country’s economic performance, there are certain employee performance challenges that have been noted in the past. These employee performance inadequacies include indifferent customer service when consumer report power outages, and increased cases of power outages including national electricity outages, and the response time of the Kenya Power and Lighting Company to such scenarios amongst other employee performance related aspects. While these challenges could be based on diverse factors, there are certain employee performance gaps that can be traced to aspects of training and development. This study therefore sought to examine the role of training and development on employee performance at the Kenya Power and Lighting Company. In particular, the study sought to examine how safety training and development, customer service training and development, technical skills, and new technology affect the employee performance at Kenya Power and Lighting Company. The study was based on goal-freedom alertness theory, action theory and resource based view theory. The study used descriptive design. The research was carried out at Kenya Power and Lighting Company Nakuru main office, which is the Central Rift Sub Region headquarters. The study targeted 274 Kenya Power and Lighting Company staff at Nakuru main office and a sample size of 73 respondents were used. The study used stratified random sampling technique. Structured questionnaires were distributed to respondents. A pilot study involving 7 respondents, 10% of study sample, was done at Kenya Power and Lighting Company Naivasha office prior to the main study. The content validity was ensured by consulting experts drawn from the university. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient whose threshold for acceptability is 0.7 was used for this study. The results show that enhancing safety training and development leads to significant enhancement of employee performance (β1 = 0.407; p < 0.05). The study found out that enhancing customer service training and development leads to statistically insignificant decline in employee performance (β2 = 0.093; p > 0.05). It was noted that improving technical skills training and development leads to significant improvement in employee performance (β3 = 0.126; p < 0.05). The study found out that improving technology training and development significantly enhances employee performance (β4 = 0.073; p > 0.05). The study concluded that safety training and development, technical skills training and development and technology training and development positively and significantly influence employee performance at KPLC. It was concluded that customer service training and development negatively and significantly influences employee performance at KPLC. The study recommends that KPLC should emphasize on training and development in relations to safety, customer service and technical skills as a means of improving the employee performance at the company. The study recommends for further study the effectiveness of diverse training methods and their influence on employee performance.
