Abstract
The motorcycle transport has become booming business because of the monetary gains
for the unemployed youths in Kenya. With the immediate monetary returns and
affordability especially where people can be advanced loans or even sell property,
majority of the rural people have embraced this mode of transport as easier and
affordable solution to their livelihoods. The vast majority of residents of East and Central
Africa struggle with poor road infrastructure and insufficient transportation options,
which restrains their ability to build their economies. The use of cheaper intermediate
modes of transportation by the underprivileged populace in sub-Saharan Africa's rural
areas has gained popularity. This study aimed to examine the determinant of commercial
motorcycle transport growth among youths in Kwale County. Objectives of the study
were; to examine the effect of government policy on growth of motorcycle transport, to
establish the effect of assess the access to finance on growth of motorcycle transport and
to determine the effect of informality of operations on growth of motorcycle transport at
Kwale County. The study was grounded on game theory. Descriptive research design was
applied to the study. The study population was categorized into commercial motorcycle
transport operators, youth group officials and Sacco personnel in Kwale County. The
study, which had 310 commercial motorbike transporters as its target audience as well as
youth group representatives and Sacco staff in Kwale County, was calculated using the
Yamane (1967) formula with a 95% confidence level (0.05 level of significance). Tables
were used to present the results. Inferential data was analyzed using multiple regression.
In-depth information was gathered via questionnaires. From findings it was established
that factors such as the government's funding, the waiver of import duties, the strict
traffic laws, the transportation sector's requirement that riders undergo mandatory
training, government policy regarding the exemption of import duties, the need for little
capital to start or run businesses, and a lack of entry behavior have led many Kenyans to
seize the opportunity to buy motorcycles and get involved in the industry. The study
concludes that access to finance has a substantial impact on the growth of motorbike
transportation. The study comes to the conclusion that the motorcycle transport industry
is expanding more quickly because of the high unemployment rates, particularly among
young people, the flexibility of the business models, the simplicity of running them, and
the convenience of obtaining and maintaining motorcycles. The study recommends that
that motorcycle operators attend riding courses to enhance their skills and form SACCOs
to address motorcycle-related issues. Motorcyclists should be required to undergo tests
and obtain licenses before being allowed to ride on public roads in order to determine
their degree of riding experience. The study recommends review of road design manual
to incorporate motorcyclist’s safety needs, formulation and implementation of strategies
that promote motorcycle ownership to enhance safety and improve livelihoods.
