dc.description.abstractThis research study investigated the effect of historical events on the selected two novels Nyongo Mkalia Ini (Chimerah, 1995) and Mafamba (Olali, 2008). The effects of historical events that include political, administrative, economic and social issues in general and how they affect the presentation of themes, characters and style and language is an issue that has not been addressed as a specific research research topic in the novel. The aim of this research has been to investigate whether historical events affect how novelists portrays themes in their literary works, investigate how historical events affect characterization and investigate how historical events affect the linguistic styles in swahili novel. The research has employed new historicism theory which was founded by Greenblatt (1980). New historicism theory puts into consideration contextual importance in composing and analyzing literary work. The theory also stipulates that, as the society develops; cultural changes occur that consequently affects composition, depiction and analysis of literary works. The topic on effect of historical events to the development of Swahili novel is important for various reasons. This research has been done in the library through reading the selected novels, journals and prior literary works relevant to the research. Research findings have be presented through analysis and explanations. The research has been presented in five chapters. The research has shown the effects of historical events on Nyongo Mkalia Ini and Mafamba. The research has shown that historical events have affected writers in depicting their themes, characters and linguistic styles in Nyongo Mkalia Ini and Mafamba respectively.en_US
