Abstract
Policy and institutional mechanisms need to be put in place to encourage local participation in the design, implementation and management of tourism projects and local use of tourism resources. To this end i study was carried out to determine the factors influencing the development of sports tourism in Kenya. It was conducted in the North and South Coast. Nairobi and the Rift valley. It was noted that most officials support sports and value the sector as very significant in Kenya. This could be because of job creation to majority of jobless citizens, a source of income to many and tax to the government, a good way of relaxing after heavy work schedules and a way of overcoming vices in the communities such as theft, irresponsible killings and ethnic conflicts. According to the study, those who agreed consisted ~0.4%, no opinion 2, 4.3% and disagree 7, 15.2%. This study suggests that there is also need for the government to re-evaluate the role of multinational corporations in the development and management of Kenya's tourism industry. In this regard, the government should establish alternative tourism development strategy whose main aim is to minimize external control and dominance of multinational corporations on Kenya's tourism industry.
