Item IMPACT REPORT Innovative Solutions for Sustainable Developmen(YALI Regional Leadership Center East Africa (YALI RLC EA), 2024-11) YALI Regional Leadership Center East Africa (YALI RLC EA)Approximately two-thirds of the African population is under 35 years old, and nearly one-third of the population is between 10 and 24 years old [1]. The Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) is the U.S. Government’s signature effort to invest in the next generation of African leaders. YALI seeks to “spur growth and prosperity, strengthen democratic governance, and enhance peace and security across Africa” [2] by enhancing the skills of young Africans who will be responsible for addressing future human development challenges. Launched in 2010, YALI consists of the Mandela Washington Fellowship, the YALI Network, and the YALI Regional Leadership Centers (RLCs). The RLC in East Africa (EA) has provided transformational leadership development experiences to 6,049 young leaders, aged 18-35, from 14 East and Central African countries. [3]. YALI RLC EA framework for measuring leadership, known as the YALI Transformative Model, combines elements from transformational leadership theories. The survey aims to quantify program benefits and identify the combination of interventions that most efficiently achieve these results. It is guided by three (3) overarching survey questions informed by our results framework. The outcomes of interest are in three main categories: improved skills (short-term outcome), demonstration of leadership behaviors (long-term outcome), and effectiveness of support networks (long-term outcome). The survey is also a primary data source for eight (8) key performance indicators requiring special data collection efforts – this is our survey's program evaluation component.
