Item Gender Differentials in Adoption of Soil Nutrient Replenishment Technologies in Meru South District, Kenya(Springer Netherlands, 2011) Mugendi, D.N.; Kirumba, E. G.; Karega, R.Understanding gender differentials in adoption of soil nutrient replenishment technologies is critical to their successful implementation by farmers. This study was conducted first to examine gender differentials in choices of technologies adopted at intrahousehold level. Second, to investigate socio-economic, institutional, and demographic factors influencing adoption, and finally to examine gender differences in the frequency of participation in project activities. The results indicated gender differences in the choice of cattle manure and inorganic fertilizer. Gender differentials were also observed in the frequency of participation in project activities. A logistic regression model developed revealed that different factors influenced adoption at intrahousehold level. In male-headed households, adoption was positively influenced by the number of cattle owned, the access to credit, the number of adults working on farm, and farmer group membership. For female-headed households, adoption was positively influenced by the area under cash crops, the number of goats owned, the number of adults working on farm, participation in project activities, and farmer group membership. There is a clear need for strategies and policy to address gender disparities in adoption of soil improvement technologies and to encourage women’s participation in agricultural training activities.Item The Role of Biological Technologies in Land Quality Management: Drivers for Farmer’s Adoption in the Central Highlands of Kenya(Springer, 2011) Kung'u, J.B.; Mutegi, J.K.; Mugendi, D.N.; Verchot, L.V.We established hedges of calliandra, leucaena, napier, and their combinations along the contours on slopes of between 5 and 40% as options for soil and nutrient management on steep arable landscapes. Hedge biomass was harvested after every 2 months following proper hedge establishment and incorporated into the plots that were served by specific hedges. After 2.5 years farmers–research group interactions were terminated and farmers were left to continue independently. Three years later the region was surveyed for adoption rates, adoption drivers, and technology adaptation. We consistently observed significantly higher soil pH, exchangeable bases (Ca and Mg), and C in both sole leguminous hedge treatments and combination hedges at time 22 months in comparison to time 0 months (P < 0.0001). Consistent significant erosion differences between hedges were observed during the fifth season on slopes exceeding 10% (P < 0.05). Farmers’ adaptations of hedges ranged from changes in type of trees used, contour hedge tree arrangement patterns, and frequency of pruning of hedge trees. The Logit model was significant at 10% level and predicted 72% of both adopters and non-adopters. The variables farmers’ contact with extension agents, education level, farm income, livestock numbers, land size, membership to group or cooperative, sex, and age were significant in explaining contour hedge adoption. We conclude that contour hedges are capable of reducing soil losses and improving crop production and that households that have more educated heads with more livestock and higher farm income are more likely to adopt contour hedge technologies.Item Social and Economic Factors for the Adoption of Agroforestry Practices in Lake Victoria Catchment, Magu, Tanzania(Springer Netherlands, 2011) Shisanya, C.A.; Tenge, A. J.; Kalumuna, M.C.Environmental degradation is an issue of concern in the Lake Victoria catchment in Mwanza, Tanzania. Deforestation and improper soil management have lead to soil erosion, lake siltation, accumulation of C in the atmosphere and climate change. Agroforestry practices, soil conservation measures, manure application and retaining low-quality crop residues as soil organic inputs could reduce environmental degradation while increasing farm productivity and income. However, these options are not widely used by smallholder farmers in the Lake Victoria catchment area. Promotion and sustainable uses of these options require understanding of the prevailing socio-economic situation of the target farmers. This research investigated the social and economic factors that influence the adoption of agroforestry practices by smallholder farmers in Magu district, Mwanza region. Focused group discussions, household surveys and transect walks were used to collect data. A total of 120 households were interviewed and several fields visited during the transect walks. Data was analysed using cross-tabulation, cluster analysis and chi-square methods. Results indicate that involvement in off-farm activities such as fishing, livestock keeping, mini-business and insecure land tenure negatively influences the adoption of agroforestry practices. Contacts with extension agents, level of training, perception of the problem and farm sizes positively influence the adoption. Recommendations to facilitate adoption include integration of socio-economic factors into agroforestry plans, creation of more awareness among farmers and other stakeholders on environmental degradation problems and strengthening the extension services.
