Item A Model to Enhance Tutorial Management in Teaching and Learning Using Cloud Computing(Kenyatta University, 2024-02) Thuku, John KiiruIntegration of ICT in teaching and learning has been a growing concern that has attracted a lot of research and inquiry following the increase in the availability, accessibility and affordability of ICT among learners and the emergence of E Learning systems. Universities face unprecedented demand to shift their pedagogues to be more learner-centered in an effort to improve student learning experience and outcomes using modern technology. However due to the increase in student enrolment there has been a gradual decline in the use of the learner-centered tutorials despite potential in enhancing students learning experience and acquisition knowledge and other academic skills. Modern technology, such as cloud computing can indicatively be integrated to improve tutorial administration and help increase students’ participation in learning. There is a lack of locally developed E-Learning systems to address challenges appropriately. The main purpose of this study was to improve the management of tutorials in teaching and learning by developing an online application model based on cloud computing. The study was guided by collaborative and constructivist theories of learning. The study was conducted at Kenyatta University where the researcher used a snowball sampling method to identify participants since not all academic programs are taught using tutorials. The study was conducted in three stages: survey on tutorials, development of online tutorial management system (Tutmas) and experimentation of the platform. The main methodology was action research but it combined agile software development approach and qualitative method at specific instances. The findings show that students and lecturers appreciated the learning experience and skills gained in regular tutorials and that Tutmas platform was quite effective in the management and administration of tutorials as well as enhancing students’ learning experiences. The recommendation is that institutions should purposefully enhance the use of tutorials and enhance their efficiency by using the cloud-based system. Students should be experiencing tutorials early once they join the University in their first year. It is recommended that tutorials should be harnessed and the system should incorporate peer review of tutorial papers in order to publish quality papers in an institutional online tutorial journal.Item Cloud Computing and its Applications in Tutorial Management: An Action Research Approach(Kenyatta University, 2015) Thuku, John Kiiru; Oyot, Henry O.; Ondigi, S. R.Item Cloud Computing and its Applications in Tutorial Management: An Action Research Approach(2015-07) Thuku, John Kiiru; Oyot, Henry O.; Ondigi, S. R.Cloud computing is a recent technology that help organizations use third party internet-based servers and computing services to manage their operations without necessarily building and maintaining the networking infrastructure. Universities in Europe, America and Asia have gradually migrated some of their systems to cloud computing with great success. Indeed research show that where cloud computing has been adopted there exists many opportunities that improve teaching, learning and management at Universities. Unfortunately many educational institutions particularly in Kenya are not able to take full advantage despite the low costs involved, flexibility in access points and ease to integrate a wide range of devices such as ipads, phones and laptops that are accessible to students and tutors. To this end, there is need for research that identifies the potential areas of application and also on the systems that work in education process. This paper explores the need for action research in integrating cloud computing in tutorial administration and group discussions as a strategy to enhance interactivity and participatory in learning. It gives an overview of functionalities of E-learning systems and how group tutorials are suitable prototypes. Finally the paper explores how Kenya, as nation in the region, is ready to embrace cloud computing in elearning systems. Libraries are commonly faced with issues related to the approach of retrospective conversion. This is because available methods are often expensive in terms of staff time, hire/purchase of external database services as a well as telecommunication charges. This research work is a report of a relatively economical appreach to retrospective conversion. In particular it is a report of a Dbase III Plus program that is developed to accept input keyed in directly from card catalogue records, existing in Kenyatta University Library, then their elements are sorted and stored in a database, each element into its proper field. Basically a cataloguer assigns a code to each record before the operator inputs them in the computer, taking care of all punctuations as in done when typing the minigraph stencils. It is an appreach whic libraries with a well defined cataloguing policy can consider to adapt.Item Role of libraries in preventing plagiarism(2017-03) Thuku, John KiiruItem Towards national etd database: responsibilities for libraries in Kenya(2013-10-18) Thuku, John KiiruThis paper outlines the status of theses and dissertations publications emanating from Kenyan universities and efforts towards enhancing their visibility. It gives a background on the factors contributing to the growth of theses and dissertations which include the rise in number of universities, increase of approved graduate courses and the higher number of students graduating. It further outlines the responsibilities for libraries in management of theses and dissertations, and emphasizes the need for adapting new technologies to fulfill their roles. Librarian, as experts in collection development, information storage, cataloguing and dissemination, should take leadership role in management of information in any format as well as in planning and developing institutional repositories. Also collaboration with various stakeholder who are concern with local content such as Kenya Education Network (KENET) is emphasized. It advocates for establishment of national repository that takes a central role in management of the scholarly research publication. It describes an institutional, national and African-based repository (INAR) model for management and dissemination of ETDs. INAR is a 3-tier hierarchal setup that has the institutional repositories (IR) are at the bottom, then the National ETDs in the middle and the regional DATAD database at the top level. It concludes with outlining the role of national repository center.
