Item Effect of Internal Control System on the Operational Performance of Organization: A Case Study of Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Headquarter, Kenya(IAJAH, 2023) Chepkonga, Lorna Chepkorir; Mbirithi, Daniel MangeThe issue of financial crisis has persisted despite the fact that internal control systems have been in place for many years in the majority of organizations. However, the current research aims to determine the effect of the internal control system on operational performance of Kenya Revenue Authority. The survey objectives were; to explore the effect of control environment, risk assessment, control activities and automation on the performance of Kenya Revenue Authority. The survey was anchored by New Public Management theory and Contingency Theory. A descriptive research design was utilized. The research targets 640 employees working at finance, administration and internal audit departments. The study sampled 128 respondents. Questionnaires were utilized to gather primary data. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected. Secondary data were gathered from annual financial reports. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially. Qualitative data were analyzed through themes and presented in verbatim forms. Only frequency, percentage, means, and standard deviations were utilized in descriptive statistics. Regression modeling and product moment correlation were used for inferential statistics. Graphs and tables were used to display the findings. The findings show that coefficient of correlation was 0.865, an indication that the study variables significantly influenced operational performance of KRA. Coefficient of adjusted determination was 0.724 which translates to 72.4%. This indicates that variations in dependents variable was explained by the independent variables (risk assessment, control environments, control activities and automation). Also, the findings from regression coefficients revealed that risk assessment, control environments, control activities and automation significantly affect the operational performance of KRA since the P-value is less than 0.05. The study concludes that internal control systems have statistically significant relationship with operational performance of Kenya Revenue Authority. The study concludes that KRA should establish strong internal control policies that will help the firm achieve its goal of optimizing revenue collection. The study recommends that management needs to be dedicated to the system's operations, set policies and processes for authorizations at a high enough level, and make sure that clear lines of authority and responsibility have been established to guarantee policy and procedure compliance. Additionally, managers need to make sure that roles in the department responsible for collecting revenue are clearly defined, train personnel on how to use the accounting and financial management system, and finally make sure that management promptly explains any differences between actual and budgeted income.Item Effects of Maritime Governance in Harnessing the Blue Economy along the Kenyan Coastline(IAJAH, 2024-11) Wanjiru, Leah Nyokabi; Mbirithi, Daniel MangeKenya’s blue economy potential has not yet been fully exploited. The rise in student population through adoption and application of different modes of learning, have raised concerns about quality of public university education. The study sought to investigate the nature and magnitude of management challenges that face Kenya‟s public universities and their implications for quality education. The study had four research objectives to; determine the nature and magnitude of management challenges facing Kenya‟s public universities in relation to their missions, determine the implications of management challenges on the quality of university education, identify the strategies public universities have put in place to cope with challenges to ensure quality of education and propose strategies the universities can adopt to mitigate the management challenges. This study was both qualitative and quantitative in nature; hence employed descriptive design. The study was carried out in three Kenya‟s public universities which were purposively sampled. The sample constituted the following: 3 vice-chancellors, 8 deputy vice-chancellors, 53 deans of schools, 158 chairpersons of departments, 12 leaders of academic and non-academic staff unions each, 12 leaders of students associations in the three public universities and 3 heads of boarding and accommodation sections. Four types of research instruments were used in data collection: questionnaires for deans of schools, chairpersons of departments and leaders of academic and non-academic staff unions, interview guides for VCs, DVCs and heads of boarding and accommodation sections, observation schedule, and document analysis. The data were analysed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics aided by statistical package for social sciences (SPSS). Quantitative data were presented in frequencies, percentages and tables while qualitative data were organized into thematic categories according to the objectives of the study. The study established that public universities that took part in the study did not have enough teaching and learning resources, especially lecture halls, computers, textbooks and library space. The study found out that insufficient fund was the biggest management challenge as it affected all the other areas of research, teaching and learning. It was also revealed that the curriculum was not adequately implemented due to inadequate teaching and learning resources and teaching staff. All these management challenges were found to have an implication on the quality of education offered in the universities. The study recommends that, the universities and the government should establish appropriate, reliable, diversified and sustainable mechanisms for financing university operations; the Commission for University Education (CUE) should institute strict quality monitoring mechanisms to universities and revises its accreditation requirements; graduates tracer studies be conducted among the workforce periodically, universities to put in place clear curriculum regulatory processes and recruit more lecturers and improve lecturers‟ incentive system.Item The effect of public engagement on service delivery in Kisumu County(Reviewed Journal International, 2024-10) Musimbi,Saliku Junne; Mbirithi, Daniel MangeThe Kenyan government begun a process of creating an Integrated Development Plan used by the municipalities to create a five-year strategic development plan.
