    Interpretation of literary aspects in Kiswahili novel: impact of cooperative approach on learners' perfomance in secondary schools of Yatta, Kenya

    The classroom situation when teaching novel to secondary school students according to recent studies indicate that learners are passive and unable to respond critically because literature lessons are often too teacher centred. Such a situation is the opposite of what a literature classroom should be like with regard to instructional approaches in literature. Various concerns have been raised regarding the wide Kiswahili syllabus which includes novel and how all this can be covered within the short stipulated time. Most Kiswahili teachers have therefore opted for teacher centred instructional approaches with the assumption that a lot of content will be covered. This discourages critical thinking amongst learners. The objective of this study is to investigate the impact of cooperative approach as an instructional strategy on performance in Kiswahili novel. The findings of this study will be beneficial to students, teachers and curriculum innovators especially with regard to the proposed approaches of teaching novel by various scholars. The Social interdependence theory which states that cooperation tends to induce and be induced by mutual assistance, exchange of needed resources and trust will guide this study. The independent variable (cooperative approach) will be manipulated by the researcher to determine its effect on the dependent variable (performance in Kiswahili novel). This is a true Experimental survey whereby a pre-test / post-test paradigm will be used to establish any relationship between variables after treatment. The target population includes all form three secondary school students in Yatta sub-county and their Kiswahili teachers, a total of 1667. From the accessible population, the sample size will be 4 secondary schools. This will be done through purposive sampling and a total of 168 respondents will participate representing 10% of the total population. Questionnaires, observation schedules and standardized tests will be used in data collection. Validity and reliability of the instruments will be ensured by use of specific techniques. Analysis of data will be done using qualitative and quantitative methods. Measures of variability and correlation techniques will be employed to determine the degree of relationships between variables of this study whereby a significance level of p<0.05 will be accepted.

    Matumizi ya Filamu Katika Kufunzia Sarufi ya Kiswahili Nchini Kenya

    Makala haya yananuia kuchunguza uwezekano wa kutumikiza filamu ili kuimarisha utendaji wa sarufi katika lugha ya Kiswahili. Ni wajibu wa mwalimu kuteua matumizi ya nyenzo inayomwezesha kuibua mazingira halisi ya kufunzia sarufi darasani. Hata hivyo licha ya wanafunzi katika jimbo la Nyeri kutumia lugha ya Kiswahili katika shughuli zao za kila siku matokeo ya mtihani katika somo la Kiswahili hasa katika mtihani wa KCSE yalikuwa dhaifu mnamo katika mwaka wa 2019. Hii ndiyo sababu iliyomchochea mtafiti wa kazi hii kuchunguza matumizi ya filamu na athiri zake kwa utendaji wa wanafunzi katika lugha ya Kiswahili katika shule za upili. Wanafunzi katika shule za upili hawajakuwa wakifanya vyema katika karatasi ya Sarufi. Kulingana na wataalamu filamu imekuwa ikitumikizwa katika kufunzia lugha ya Kingereza huko Umarekani na Uingereza na pia somo la Hisabati katika Afrika Kusini ambapo iliripotiwa kwamba wanafunzi waliotumikiza filamu walifanya vyema katika kujifunza Kingereza na Hisabati. Nchini Kenya filamu imekuwa ikitumikizwa na walimu katika kufunzia somo la Fasihi na hivyo kubagua kipengele cha sarufi. Pengo hili liliibua haja ya kutafitia matumizi ya filamu katika kufunzia sarufi ya Kiswahili angalao kuboresha matokeo ya karatasi ya pili yaani inayojulikana kama sarufi au Matumizi ya Lugha. Makala haya yaliongozwa na Nadharia ya utabia ya Hermer (1996), kupitia kwa mihimili yake tofauti. Utafiti huu ulitekelezwa maktabani na nyanjani. Utafiti wa maktabani ulichangia kutambua usuli wa matumizi ya filamu ulimwenguni. Utafiti wa nyanjani ulifanyika katika eneo la Mukurweini linaloakilisha jumuiya ya wanafunzi wanaotumia silibasi sawia na wanafunzi wengine kote nchini Kenya. Sampuli zilizotumikizwa ziliteuliwa kimakusudi na kwa njia za kuelezea. Katika ukusanyaji data utafiti huu ulizingatia mbinu za hojaji, Uchunzaji na mtihani kwa wanafunzi. Data iliyokusanywa ilichanganuliwa na kuwasilishwa kupitia michoro na maelezo tofauti. Kufuatia jinsi wanafunzi wamekuwa wakipata gredi dhaifu katika sarufi kwa muda wa miaka mitano mfululizo.
