dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this study was to investigate the methods used by primary school headteachers in raising funds for school facilities in Makadara Division, Nairobi Province and the problems related to these methods. The questionnaire, interview and observation was used for data collection together with a checklist. There was a questionnaire for ten headteachers and an interview schedule for Divisional Advisor. Data provided by the respondents indicated the common methods used by the headteachers and the Divisional Advisor were similar which included: (a) P.T.A (b) The Nairobi City Council (c) Harambee (d) Donations (e) Church. The most popular method was P.T.A by 80 percentages as indicated by the headteachers. Despite the fact that 50 percentage of the schools are sponsored by the city council and 40 percentage by the churches. However it was also indicated as the most difficult source to collect funds from by 60 percentage headteachers. This research also realized that there were some specific typed of conceptual problems cited by the respondents. They stated that these problems have serious impact on the school facilities availability: Such problems were-: (a) Parents defaulting fees payment due to wrong attitude brought by concept of free education and cost sharing. (b) Harsh economic situation where many have no employment or are lowly paid. It can be concluded that there is an urgent need to educate parents/community on the clashing concepts and the parents responsibility in the provision of school facilities in 'partnership' with the government and also that the incomes for many city dwellers should be increased and more employment opportunities created and security ensured for the jobs by the Government. | en_US |
