dc.description.abstractIt is generally agreed that workers join and stay in organisations if they are satisfied with their jobs. It follows that teachers will join and stay in the teaching profession and be more committed to their work if they are satisfied. This is very important since the quality of education largely depends on the teachers. If the teachers are dissatisfied, the quality of education in our primary schools will suffer. The purpose of this study was to find out the factors that contribute to job sa~isfaction and dissatisfaction among primary school teachers in Shinyalu Division of Kakamega District. The researcher thought the identification of such factors would assist in attempting to reduce turnover, abstenteeism and deterioration of work effectiveness among primary teachers. The research involved a total of one hundred teachers in 8 selected schools in the division. The research was conducted by use of questionnaires which were completed by the teachers. The results were analysed and expressed in frequencies and percentage form. The factors which were mentioned more frequently as contributing •to overall job satisfaction were: relationship with pupils, relationship with fellowen_US
