Abstract
Increased access to technology and the widespread use of technology devices in Africa have created new opportunities for sports betting that were not previously available. Sport betting has taken off among Kenya’s youth population, who are mostly sports lovers. Poor investment decisions among the youths have led to these youths suffering huge losses. This study aimed to ascertain how financial technology affect the investment choices made by youths in Nairobi City County, Kenya who bet on sports. The specific objectives were to determine the effect of data-based services, mobile services and digitalized platforms on investment decisions among youths involved in sports betting. The study further assessed the moderating effect of government policy on the relationship between financial technology and investment decisions among youths involved in sports betting. The study was anchored on prospect theory, technological acceptance theory, and heuristic theory. The study adopted a descriptive research design and target population was 302,540 youths who wager on sports. A sample size of 384 was selected using simple random sampling technique. The study obtained primary data using questionnaires. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean, frequency, percentage, and standard deviation), and inferential statistics such as correlation and regression analysis. The study findings indicated that data-based services had a positive and significant effect on investment decisions among youths involved in sports betting. Mobile services according to the study findings also had a positive and significant effect on investment decisions among youths involved in sports betting. Digitalized platforms, according to the study findings had a positive and significant effect on investment decisions among youths involved in sports betting. Further, government policy statistically and significantly moderated the relationship between financial technology and investment decisions among youths involved in sports betting. Consequently, the study concluded that data-based services, Mobile services, and Digitalized platforms all individually had a statistical and significant effect on investment decision and therefore all the null hypotheses were rejected. The study recommended that the government should increase and improve mobile coverage across the country by allocating more resources during the budgeting process. Further, to bring more youths on board, the government should incentivize data providers such as mobile network operators through Tax Incentives and Subsidies to reduce the cost of accessing information aimed at making good investment decisions by the youths.
