| dc.description.abstract | A comprehensive school safety is fundamental to students' school success and achievement. School administrators are therefore advised to set up programmes and practices that promote effective and safe learning environment. Various unsafe situations in schools have been reported in our local media, for example fire outbreaks, violence in schools, poor living conditions, unsafe physical infrastructure, bullying among others. It is against this background that the study seeks to establish strategies schools should use in ensuring the safety of students in public secondary schools with particular reference to Awendo District in Migori County. The purpose of this study is therefore to determine how schools are prepared in ensuring the safety of the students, considering the safety as stipulated by the Ministry of Education. The objectives of the study are to identify indicators of safe school environment, determine factors leading to unsafe school environment and to establish strategies for promoting safe school environment with particular reference to secondary schools in Awendo District. A descriptive survey design will be used to conduct this study. The target population will constitute 22 public secondary schools, 360 Teachers, 22 Principals and 6,852 students Awendo District. The sample of the respondents will be 48 Teachers, 8 Principals and 160 students. Data will be collected using questionnaires and observation schedules and presented in simple tables. A pilot study will be conducted in one of the secondary schools which will not be included in the final study sample. Data will be analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Qualitative analysis will use descriptive technique and data narrations and quantitative analysis will use SPSS, statistical technique, graphical and measuring of numerical values to organize data | en_US |
