It is majorly believed that the basis of teaching and learning of a language is its communicative competence. Acquisition and execution of oral and written competences are replete with numerous linguistic challenges, more so for foreign language learners. It is, however generally agreed that oral comprehension and expression skills in a foreign language present more unique challenges for learners. This study therefore set out to explore the challenges in oral expression that affect secondary students who learn French in Kisumu County. It specifically sought to find out the perception of oral expression in French by the learners. In addition, the challenges that affect learners in oral production in French were also found out. Furthermore, the nature of difficulties linked to the oral expression in French by target students were also explored. Lastly, the strategies that teachers and learners adopt in overcoming difficulties in oral expression in French were also tackled. This was done through data collected from sampled learners and teachers of French from the selected secondary schools offering French in Kisumu County. Systematically sampled learners responded to a questionnaire aimed at establishing their preliminary data for analysis before making a guided exposition on a topic of their choice. The teachers were purposely sampled and given a questionnaire to complete so as to supply data on their profile and teaching experience. In order to access the necessary data for the study, questionnaire, direct lesson observation and oral tests were used. The data obtained from both students and teachers were presented in tables, grids and graphics and analyzed using SPSS software. It is hoped that the findings of this study, specifically on the problems of oral expression in French will be of value in Kenya and regions where French is taught as a foreign language. In particular, learners, teachers, Ministry of Education and researchers will benefit from this study.
