Abstract
Across the world, in teacher's training institutions of all tiers, a teacher's work plan is one of the essential requirements. This must be met by the student teacher during his/her teaching practice exercise in order to qualify as an effective teacher. Consequently, during supervision the supervisor assesses the extent to which the student teacher plans his/her lessons, how comprehensive the plan is and the effective use of the plan among others. This is because lesson planning and effective implementation of the same in the classroom situation is seen as one of the most important tools to effective teaching and learning process. The main objective of this study was to find out factors that influence effective lesson planning among pre-school teachers in Homa Bay District. In order to do this, thirty five schools were randomly selected from two divisions, which were also randomly selected. The subjects for the study included pre-school teachers and head-teachers/ managers of the selected schools. Five District Center for EarlyChildhood Education (DICECE) offers also took part in the study. Data were obtained from the subjects by means of questionnaire, observation schedule and interviews, which were later, presented intables of frequency distributions. Data were analysed by use of t-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) at significance level of 0.05 The following findings were revealed as factors that influence effective lesson planning among the pre -school teachers: training, management style, class size and the type of training programme.
