Background: Medicinal plants are used to treat various ailments in Kenya. This study describes the antibacterial activity of medicinal plant extracts used in traditional medicine in Kenya. Seven medicinal plants were studied to determine antimicrobial effect of plant extracts in vitro after phytochemical screening. Materials and methods: Dry materials of the plants, A. remota, B. micrantha, S. didymobotrya, C. africana, P. peruviana, P. africana, and A. annua were sequentially extracted using three solvents - water, methanol, and hexane. Antimicrobial activity of plant extracts against E. coli, P. aeruginosa, B. cereus and M. smegmatis was determined by Kirby Bauer disc diffusion assay.en_US
