dc.description.abstractThe objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of hygienic physical environment on educational output in selected public primary schools in Wajir, County, Kenya. Specifically, the research sought to investigate the individual and joint effect of access to quality water, quality sanitation and hygienic conditions on the performance of the selected public primary schools in Wajir County. The study was anchored on the Child Friendly schools model developed by UNICEF due to its inclusivity in defining a good schooling environment in terms of safe, clean, healthy and protective environment for children. The study adopted a descriptive research due to its applicability in measuring the univariate data measures adopted in the questionnaire. The study locale was Wajir County while the unit of analysis was 35 public primary schools with the population of the study being 18,843 pupils in the schools. The research adopted random and purposive sampling techniques whereby 10 primary schools were randomly selected to form the sample and the target respondents were the 10 head teachers of the selected Schools. The researcher carried out a pre-test of the instruments in three schools in Wajir County that were not part of the schools that were sampled. To this end, the researcher employed expert opinion from the supervisors when constructing the questionnaires. The validity of the data collection instrument was established through the use of the supervisor’s guidance, the instruments were found to meet the objectives of the study hence ready for administrations. Pre-testing was used to determine the reliability of the research instruments in the study. Simple linear regression was conducted between the independent variables (access to quality water, access to quality sanitary facilities and access to hygienic conditions) and the dependent variable (performance in examinations). It was noted that, the linear regression translated into an adjusted R-square, which indicated that 72.1 percent, 32.1 percent and 0.5 percent of the variations in performance in examinations could be attributed to access to quality water, access to quality sanitary facilities and access to hygienic conditions respectively. The respondents’ views and satisfaction levels also provided that, access to quality water, access to quality sanitary facilities and access to hygienic conditions were inadequate in most of the schools and that their inadequacies affected pupils’ performance in national examinations. The study recommended that more wells and bore holes to be dug, rainwater to be harvested, adequate water storage facilities to be provided and maintained and piped water to be installed at strategic place in the schools.en_US
