Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors influencing the retention of girls in upper primary in Juja Zone of Thika District. Research data was collected to find out the extent of girls dropout in upper primary schools in Juja Zone of Thika District, the major causes of girls dropping out of school, challenges and the effects of girls' school dropout in schools and in the country. Four schools out of 24 were selected for the study. 160 pupils, 16 teachers and 4 headteachers were used for the study. Simple random sampling was used to select the participants of the study. The study used a descriptive survey design and utilized questionnaires and an interview schedule for data collection.
Data was analyzed using various descriptive statistics and organized according to the objectives and research questions through the SPSS for effective interpretation and further deductions. Data was reported using frequencies and percentages.
Findings indicated that school dropout is a problem and girls are more affected than boys, causes of girls drop out include pregnancy, poor performance, early marriage, child labour and repetition of grades, Guidance and counseling services are required in the schools, and that the school administration, teachers, parents and the government have a role in dealing with the problem of girls' school dropout. The recommendations given were in relation to improving quality of teaching, participation of the parents in the education of their children, professional development for teachers and strengthening the Guidance and Counseling services in primary schools.
