With the advancement of society, particularly in the print media and publishing industries, the printing subsector produces an abundance of waste ink, which is discarded into the environment. However, in some parts of the world, it has been proven that waste ink can be upcycled into a useful artistic medium by artists in the creation of works of art. Despite waste ink being utilised as a painting medium in countries like Australia and U.S.A, limited studies indicate evidence of waste ink from digital printers being applied as a painting medium in Kenya. In light of this gap, this study explored upcycled waste ink as an effective painting medium. This study applied an exploratory research design study in investigating waste ink as a medium for painting examining the suitability of waste ink against certain variables such as surfaces, colour inks, techniques, tools and preservation methods. The results of the study were used to determine the level of effectiveness in each category in order to inform the holistic efficacy of upcycled waste ink in the painting genre. For this to be showcased effectively, the study applied waste ink in the creation of a series of paintings based on birds that are common in Nairobi City County. The result of the experiments and the conclusive study indicated that waste ink does indeed possess the qualities necessary to be classified as a viable artistic medium. The outcome of the study and the effects shown on the application paintings will be compiled and disseminated to groups of artists in due course.en_US
